
Vernon ISD is pleased to announce Jeremiah Hastings has accepted the position as head band director of our district band program. Mr. Hastings comes to us after serving as the director of bands at Cooper ISD for 13 years. Please join us in welcoming him to the community. A public come-and-go meet and greet for Mr. Hastings will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 15, in the boardroom of the Administrative Center.


Yesterday our VISD Grounds and Transportation Department held its annual hamburger cookout and presented their end of the year awards. Kenneth Reynolds was named the Custodian of the Year, while Kenneth Newton received the Maintenance Worker of the Year award. The Bus Driver of the Year award went to Steve Azbell. We greatly appreciate all of our custodians, maintenance workers and bus drivers. Your behind-the-scenes work is invaluable to Vernon ISD. It would be hard for the district to function without all of you!! Thank you for another great year!!

Today is School Nurse's Day and we have 3 of the best there is. Amanda Thomas, Jennifer Walker and Rhonda Garrett -- for all of the runny noses you've wiped; the scraped knees you've bandaged; the upset stomachs you've helped settle and everything in between -- we THANK YOU!! VISD is lucky to have the 3 of you providing health care, and at times health education, at our campuses!


This morning our McCord 1st graders took a field trip to the Vernon Elementary School to get a tour of the school they will be attending next year. Members of the VES Student Council served as tour guides.








Valley ISD reached out to area school districts concerning a first grade student who has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Valley ISD is holding a fundraiser "Hats On For Paxton" tomorrow to help the young man and his family, and Vernon ISD is joining in. For a $1 donation, students, teachers and staff will be allowed to wear their cap/hat in class. Teachers will collect donations in their classrooms.

This group of Vernon Elementary students received a free pizza after someone donated blood in their name during the VES Blood Drive held in April. The blood drive was for Our Blood Institute (formerly Texas Blood Institute) and they provided the pizza for the students.


Vernon ISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward and Asst. Supt. Blaise Boswell are busy cooking hamburgers this morning, the first day of Teacher Appreciation Week. Today they are cooking burgers for teachers at McCord Elementary, DAEP, Opportunity Center, AFP and WSSA. On Tuesday, they will be cooking for the teachers and staff at Vernon Elementary, and Wednesday it will be the teachers and staff at Middle School who will get to enjoy the burgers. Vernon High School teachers and staff will receive their hamburger lunch on Thursday. On Friday, custodial, maintenance and bus barn staff will be treated to a hamburger lunch.


On Friday, VES teacher Courtney Jansa was surprised to learn she had been named a Red River Best Chevy Dealers Teacher of the Year. Vernon Auto Group's Kyle Echols presented Mrs. Jansa with a check for $1,000 and a check for $250 to VES Principal Leslie Powell and VISD Asst. Supt. Blaise Boswell. Congratulations Mrs. Jansa!!


It's coming....the McCord Roundup is set for Monday!! For all McCord students and parents, and especially for children who will be attending McCord next year and their parents. Tour the school!! We all know that it takes a village to put on any type of an event, but it also takes a leader. We would like to give Coach Edwin Bah a shout out for leading the way for our All-Star Olympics that was held here Monday for our Life Skills students and for helping take them to compete yesterday in Altus. We would also like to thank all the coaches, teachers, staff and students who helped make it a special day for our special students. I think we enjoyed as much, if not more, than they did. Seeing all of the smiles was priceless!



Today is National School Lunch Hero Day and we want to give a HUGE shoutout to our VISD cafeteria workers. We appreciate their work in ensuring our cafeterias serve good, nutritional meals to our students. They go above and beyond for our students!! Thank you for all that you do!!


Our 2nd & 3rd Grade Spring Program that was originally scheduled for Monday, May 13, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 14.

After the Opening Ceremonies, students competed in several events including the Softball Toss, Ball Race, Broad Jump, 25-Yard Race, and more. A big thank you to our Roarin' Lion Band, cheerleaders, VHS athletes and the teachers and coaches who came out to help run the event.
